And so to the final day of our countdown. Today’s featured player is the only one with over 200 appearances, Paul Salmon.
Salmon came through the Leyton youth set-up, and made his debut at the age of only 16.
In Leyton Pennant’s first season he was a rock at the heart of the defence, making 48 starts, scoring four goals.
The following season, he made 38 starts, scoring twice, and made a further 41 starts in the 1997-8 season.
In the final season of his first spell with the club, he racked up an incredible 54 appearances, scoring twice.
Salmon was known for his no-nonsense solid performances at the back, but had a scoring touch, finding the back of the net 17 times in his 206 appearances – not bad for a defender.
Perhaps his most incredible goal came against Purfleet, where a he found the back of the net from inside his own penalty area.
At the end of the 1998-9 season Salmon moved onto Ford United along with Billy Read, where he would be a key part in their rise above the pyramid.
Experience was the order of the day as Hakan Heyrettin built his 2003-4 season, and Salmon was brought back for a second spell at the club.
He made 25 starts that season, scoring three times. Unfortunately for Salmon, a progression of injuries caused him to cut his playing career slightly shorter than he would have perhaps liked.
His final game for the club came on the 28th of February, a 4-1 win over Aveley.
