It’s nice to welcome the New Year in with a visit from some old friends, Basildon United.

Although Waltham Forest have enjoyed a winter break Basildon have managed to get a few games under their belt and moved up the table, leaving a slight gap between them and us. Basildon United were formed back in 1963 and for most of their time have played in the Essex Senior League.

They have been champions of the Essex Senior League on five occasions including four in succesion. In 1980/1 they joined the Athenian League gaining promtion at the first attempt.

These were our first league meetings and honour were equal with both clubs drawing their home games.

The following season, as Leyton Wingate, we bossed the league without being defeated and followed Basildon into the Isthmian League. Basildon United were champions in 1983/4 but they struggled for most of their time in the Isthmian League Division One. Once they were relegated to Division Two they appeared to lose their way and dropped back into the Essex Senior League.

What is interesting from out point of view is that the very next season after Basildon gained promoted we joined them by winning the league.

So our best wishes certainly go with them for the rest of the season, that is after today. The programme shown is the first meeting between Leyton (Wingate) and Basildon United in the 3rd Round of the FA Vase in 1979/80. Despite going a goal down to the then unbeaten league leaders of the Essex Senior, goals from Delroy Rhoden and Tony Warwick saw us through.

I noticed that the cost of the programme is shown as 5p and this was doubled in price for the following season in the Athenian League – come on lads we don’t expect that sort of thing in the Non-league game (unless Canvey Island are visiting).
