Classic programme – Summer starts

Welcome this afternoon to Basildon United. Is the game limited to 90 minutes or twenty overs? This is an historic day as it is the first time we have ever kicked-off in a competitive match in July.

With good reason – it’s too hot, the schools are on holiday and spectators, players and officials will either be on holiday or going. You would have thought that after 150 years of competitive football the fixture secretary of the Essex Senior League would have realised by now that this is not a good idea.

Football should start in September after the cricket has ended and the schools have gone back.

I have searched around and come up with the only programme played in June.

Held at the old Leyton ground in Osborne Road on the 6th June 1940. When a combined Leyton & Leytonstone team took on Clapton Orient for the Mayor of Leyton’s Fund for the Troops.

The Leyton players Included goakeeper Bert Gibbs, with Jock Watson, Les Hockaday and Harry Neale in defence and Freddie Boatwright and Les Cameron on the wings.

Running the line that evening was Tommy Cable who after winning the Amateur Cup with Leyton played for QPR and then Tottenham Hotspur.
