Classic programme: FA Cups

Its FA Challenge Cup time again and the visitors are Hoddesdon Town in the first of the qualifying rounds.

Having already progressed through one round (for us that equates as success), for me my mind drifted back to 1951/2. The previous season Leyton had finished in last place in the Athenian League, just as disappointing as last season.

In the 1951/2 season we did go on a decent cup run which involved thirteen ties before going out at Chester City in the 2nd Round. So I thought we would go back to the Premliminary Round in September 1951 when the visitors were Wembley in a replay – it took a third game before we beat them.

In the Leyton side were Sid Sullivan in goal, Harry Dixon and Ron Pullinger at the back. Len Casey, he went on to play for Chelsea, the late Ken Yenson and Les Gardiner. Up front we had Charlie Fitch (was in Australia) and Ken Facey who later captained Leyton Orient.

I checked up and Ken played 301 games for the O’s. My aim is to feature the other ties as we progress.

We will be knackered if Forest reach beyond the 2nd Round, but by then who would care?
