At the start of the 2017-18 season, there was uncertainty as to what effect the creation of a new Essex league at step 6 would have on the Essex Senior League.

Clubs were initially told “as many as four” teams would be relegated, but as the season came to a close, the League’s official Twitter account repeatedly said it would be the bottom three as a maximum, as Eton Manor, who failed to start the season, would take the place of the fourth team.

So it came as a surprise to many when the league’s Twitter account released this news this morning.

The promotions were as expected, but many were shocked to see Stansted relegated. Indeed, some projections had reprieves being offered to Wadham Lodge and Burnham Ramblers too.

Stansted have said they’ll appeal the decision.

This shows how crucial Forest’s five game unbeaten run at the end of the season was, especially the win over Stansted. If it were not for those 11 points in five games, we could be looking at a very different summer.
