There’ll be a local derby in the first round of the Essex Senior Cup this season as Walthamstow were drawn at home to Ilford on BBC Radio Essex last night.
The two clubs first met in the competition in December 1900. With Leyton leading 2-1, the game was abandoned, but a week later the tie was settled, Leyton running out 3-0 winners, eventually going all the way and beating Woodford 4-3 in the final.
And both sides have got some history in the competition, with Ilford winning the title 13 times and Leyton/Leyton Pennant/Waltham Forest/Walthamstow nine times, the most recent in 2005-6 as Waltham Forest won the title. You have to go back to 1954 for Ilford’s last cup triumph.
The tie will be played by the 9th of September, with the winners away to either Halstead Town (which is only about 8 miles from Suffolk) or Southend Manor (which is only about 8 miles from the Netherlands) in the second round.
