Ryan Maxwell’s side return to competitive action this Saturday, as the club plays its first ever game as Walthamstow FC.

It’s been a summer of change both on and off the field, as Ryan has looked to build a team capable of challenging for the Essex Senior League title.

The first test comes this Saturday against Senior League new boys Hoddesdon Town. The two sides met as recently as 2015, then in the FA Cup when goals from Jeff Hammond, Jordan McKenzie and a double from Correy Davison saw Walthamstow run out 4-0 winners. Lee Flynn, Ryan Maxwell, Gus Douglas and Kubilay Akbayrak were all in the squad that day, and should feature in Saturday’s game, two years later.

For our visitors, it’s been a tough summer, being shifted from a division where they had the best part of 30 years’ history into a new-look Essex Senior League. Hoddesdon appealed the decision, but were promptly told in no uncertain terms by the FA to get on with it.

We’ve got history

We’ve only played Hoddesdon three times in our history – winning just once, in the FA Cup.

Common people

Mark Twumasi: Mark joined Walthamstow midway through the 2014-15 season, part of a handfull of players brought in by Rob Patwell to try and save the club from relegation. He ultimately failed, and would be relegated again 12 months later, this time with Burnham Ramblers. He moved on to Hoddesdon the following season, where he made 23 appearances, scoring twice. One start for Hertford town in 2016-17 was the only appearance made before starting last season with Aveley. He made his last appearance just before Christmas and hasn’t been seen playing since.

Kardan Campbell: Midfielder Kardan joined Walthamstow at the start of the 2011-12 season, but was only really involved in the peripheries of the team, making 10 starts and a handful of substitute appearances. He was more successful up the road in Hertford, making 13 appearances that season, and going on to make 159 appearances for the blues, an almost ever-present. At the start of the 2016-17 season he made the switch to Hoddesdon, and featured in the cup tie with Walthamstow that season. He has now made 73 appearances for the Hertfordshire side, scoring three goals.
