The 26th of January appears to be quite a day for Cup fixtures. Only seven of our 17 games on this day have been league games, though it is worth rememebering that County Cup games were often played on Saturdays in years gone by. They also carried a lot more prestiege then.

Games on this day average just over five and a half goals a match; perhaps there’s something in the way the moon aligns on the 26th of January. Either that, or in 1924 and 1929, neither us nor Leytonstone (6-4) or Chelmsford City (7-3) could be bothered to do any defending.

Little is known of Clapton Clifton – they were not a precursor to the Clapton in our league now. They played in the London League, but folded midway through its inaugural 1896-7 season.

The 1906 victory over Northampton Town shows just how strong Leyton were in the early 1900s, but also begs the question of how did the club afford, and enjoy travelling such distances? We start to grumble when we have to travel outside the M25, with all our modern luxuries.

The friendly victory over Romford in 1878 remains one of the club’s all-time record wins, albeit for a non-competitive match. The record for a competitive game remains 12-2 against Napier Athletic in the second round of the 1942-43 London Senior Cup. A record which will no doubt stand for a good few more years.

The game against Wivenhoe Town in 1991 was the 15th game Leyton-Wingate had gone without winning. We would win the following week against Purfleet in the Essex Thameside Trophy, but only two more league wins all season would see us relegated from the Isthmian Premier division.
