If there was ever a case of a debut flattering to deceive, it would probably be Karem’s.
Away to Berkhamsted Town in the FA Trophy, he came on from the bench to score twice in a 4-1 victory. That was on the 9th of October, and Karem would have to wait until the 26th of the same month to score again – this time in a 3-1 Southern League Cup victory over Erith & Belvedere.
He seemed to have something about cup goals, and his only other successful strike for the rest of the season would be in a 2-0 Essex Senior Cup victory over Stansted.
Four goals in seven games didn’t really tell the true story of the forward who had just been released from Crystal Palace – along with Tariq Nabil who was also in the Forest team at the start of the 2004-5 season.
Fitness was a struggle, and in two seasons with Forest, he only made 16 first team appearances.
Spells with Cheshunt and Staines Town followed, where he again made impressive debuts before falling away. He re-signed for Forest in the 2007-8 season, but was limited to only three appearances.
After what appeared to be a long time out of senior football, he cropped up playing for Broxbourne Borough under former Forest manager Kem Kemal in 2013. He managed to make 17 appearances in Division 1 of the Spartan League, and followed Kemal to Ware the following season, making nine appearances in the Isthmian League Division One.
But Bashkal hasn’t been seen playing competitively since, (though he has cropped up in the KOPA Cypriot League) and is now a Herbalife salesman.
