With the return to non-league football just a week away, Max Mitchell has continued to strengthen his squad, welcoming former Hertford Town midfielder Brett O’Connor to the club.
Brett is a left-footed midfielder who had spells at St Margaretsbury, Hoddesdon Town and Hertford before playing at both Tring Athletic and Colney Heath last season. Ahead of the 2019/20 season, O’Connor felt Walthamstow was the right move with the chance to work under Max. “The main reason I joined was Max,” he said when asked what attached him to Walthamstow. “I had some chats with a couple of other managers, but once I spoke to Max and he told me what he wanted to achieve at Walthamstow that was me set.”
With the return of football a week from Saturday, it can’t come soon enough for the new addition. “I can’t wait now. There’s only so much running you can do before you get bored!”
Walthamstow had battled for the title last season before it was cut short, but the target still remains the same. Brett felt his experience could really benefit the East London club. “There’s only one main target for me and that’s winning the league. I know it will be tough though, as there are a number of strong teams in this league. A good cup run in the Vase or FA Cup would be good also.”
“I’m 31 now so I know I’ll bring a lot of experience with me. I’ve played for a few sides that are always battling it out for the league title so I’d like to think that experience will help; depending on what position I’m playing in! I can play right or left wing, in the 10 role or left back so I’m quite versatile. I like getting on the ball and making things happen” he added.
The prospect of playing alongside former teammates has excited the new signing. “I’ve played with a lot of the boys already. I’m excited to play alongside Toner as I haven’t played with him for a couple of seasons.”
