Walthamstow were defeated in their second home league game of the season as Southend Manor took the three points. Goals from Jon Clements and James Hammond were not enough as Manor scored three to seal the win.
It was a strong start from Walthamstow as they looked to take an early lead. Jason Beck saw his header from a corner headed off the line before a second corner was swung in towards Reece Conway but it was fired over. Sam Jeremiah did well down the left to beat the full-back but his low cross was just missed by Conway who tried to do a back-heel flick before Jeremiah received the ball down the right and cut inside but his shot was just over the bar.
It was Southend Manor who took the lead, against the run of play, as a header took the ball over Charlie Mann and bounced into the bottom corner. They were almost in again, less than 5 minutes later, when their left-sided player beat Hammond and feed it across the box but the shot was blocked before it was cleared. Despite conceding, Stow continued to dominate possession. A free-kick from David Cowley was punched by the keeper as far as Conway on the edge of the box but his head back in was comfortable for the keeper before a shot from Jeremiah was punched well by Klinton Makayabo in the Manor goal. Sam Jeremiah also hooked a shot from a tight angle which bounced close to the line but it was cleared before anyone to pounce on the loose ball.
Reece Conway dragged a low shot wide before Stow had their equaliser in the 40th minute. A Connor Scully cross was put right on Jon Clements head with the Stow forward heading it well past the keeper. Right on the stroke of half-time, Brett O’Connor tried to deliver a cross but it was held well by the keeper.
Southend Manor thought they had scored in the opening minute of the second-half as the forward was played through and lifted the ball over Charlie Mann but it was ruled offside. Instead, it was Walthamstow who scored the first goal of the second-half as they turned it around. A cross from Cowley was put into a dangerous area and headed well by James Hammond. Sam Jeremiah had another shot but it was saved by the keeper and collected on the second attempt before Clements could pounce on the loose ball.
Manor equalised soon after as Mann missed a cross and the loose ball was tapped in before, 7-minutes later, they retook the lead after they were awarded a penalty. The forward was brought down and the spot-kick was converted.
Following the penalty, Stow were playing with 10-men as Vinny Murphy was sin-binned but they continued to come forward. A shot from Charncey Dash was deflected off the heels of Cowley before a shot was dragged wide from distance. Southend defended well as Walthamstow looked to play through their defence. Stow couldn’t find the pass to unlock the defence as they looked for a late equaliser. As the game approached it end, Connor Scully skied a shot from distance before a free-kick from Cowley was fired over.
