Walthamstow 3-1 Woodford Town

Walthamstow were victorious on Tuesday as they came up against Woodford Town at Wadham Lodge. Goals from Jon Clements, Michael Toner and Callum Ibe were enough for the three points, although the scoreline didn’t reflect Stow’s dominanance. The win saw Stow move up to 4th in the league, level on points with Hadley and Southend Manor.

It was a quick start from Walthamstow as they looked to get an early goal. A header from new-signing Toib Adeyemi was directed just wide on his debut before Woodford had a series of crosses but the ball was caught by Conor Sansom in the end. The deadlock was broken in the sixth minute when Jon Clements finished well past Rasmus Kriisa after his initial effort was tipped onto the post.

Two minutes later, the lead was doubled. Michael Toner had spotted the keeper off his line and fired an effort from near the half-way line which nestled into the back of the net. The early goals gave Stow confidence as they piled forward, looking for more goals. A low ball from Connor Scully was just ahead of Clements before the Stow front-man made a good run but his touch was too heavy and it was safely into the hands of Kriisa. Woodford had a rare chance as a diving head was sent just wide before the Stags continued to dominate. Ibe set up a chance for Clements after a good touch by the forward was denied by a good save before good play between Charncey Dash and Clements saw another shot well saved.

Jon Clements was looking to add to his goal but his header was well held onto by Kriisa before his volley was fired just over. As half-time approached, Walthamstow up the pressure looking for another goal. Dash fired a shot just wide before a diving header from Reece Conway was just missed as the keeper punched the ball clear. The third goal came sux minutes before half-time as Callum Ibe broke through and slotted well past the keeper. Stow had two shouts for a penalty turned away by the referee on the stroke of half-time; first Callum Ibe had his feet taken from underneath him before Michael Toner rounded the keeper and was brought down.

Right from the off in the second-half, it was Stow who dominated. An effort from distance from Michael Toner who over before Scully tried playing the ball through to Dash but it was well defended. Reece Conway fired a driving effort towards goal but it was well held by the Town keeper and a shot from distance from Scully was just wide of the target.

An excellent blind-sided through ball was played to Clements by Dash but the shot was deflected off the keeper and wide. As the game approached the last ten minutes, Woodford came into the game a bit more. A header was just wide before an effort Rigert Rama was just over from distance. Despite an effort from Jack Folan from distance and a header from Reece Conway, it was Woodford who scored. A long-range effort from Ezequiel Franchi crept beyond Sansom. The goal had given the Woods a brief spell of confidence as they pushed further up the pitch. A shot was punched clear by Sansom to deny them a second.

In the final ten minutes of the game, it was all Walthamstow. Jon Clements was played through but sent his shot inches wide of the near post before the front-man volleyed an effort just over the bar. A cross-shot from Vinny Murphy was well caught before a good run from Ruben Bartlett-Antwi saw his get into a good position but his shot was tipped away but the rebounded effort was over from Emiel Aiken from an angle. In added-time, a clash between the Woodford keeper and defender saw the ball spill but the keeper did well to collect the ball before anyone could pounce.
