Goals from Lewis Francis and Billy Jones saw Walthamstow reach the quarter-finals of the Errington Challenge Cup as they beat St Margaretsbury by two goals to nil. Although the home side had more of the ball, it was a game of few chances with Stow being more clinical.
It didn’t take Walthamstow long to take the lead when Billy Jones finished through the keeper’s legs 5 minutes into the match after good work from Emiel Aiken saw his past a couple of defenders down the before pulling back to Jones.
There was little goal-mouth action but Lewis Francis doubled Stow’s lead around the 40th minute-mark when a long thrown was flicked on by Dwade James before being volleyed into the net by Francis at the back post.
The second half was very much like the first with lack of goal-mouth action. There was a 20-minute delay 10 minutes into the second half when the floodlights failed as the game threatened to finish early but luckily the game carried on.
St Margaretsbury pushed for goals to get back in the game and came close twice in the second half. The forward was played through but dragged his shot wide as James Bransgrove came out before a free header was missed by the home side in the 89th minute.
