Walthamstow went up against Buckhurst Hill in the Essex Thameside Trophy on Saturday afternoon as they played their third cup game in a row. It was a tough game for both sides as the game ended in a stalemate and went to penalties but it was Walthamstow who came out on top.

The first real chance of the game came when Danny McCullock was denied by the keeper when he was played through for a one-on-one. A resulting corner was blocked on the line a number of times to deny Stow.

Buckhurst Hill wondered how they hadn’t scored when their forward went around the keeper but was denied by the post as he shot too wide. It didn’t take long for the home side to eventually break Stow’s resistance when a shot was deflected into the top corner from a corner that wasn’t cleared properly.

As the half went on, Walthamstow kept up the pressure and tried to find an equaliser. A corner was sent in by Ryan Reed but Stow couldn’t find the elusive goal and the teams went into the break with the home side leading.

It was Walthamstow who dominated the start of the second half but despite the dominance, it was Buckhurst Hill who looked most likely to score. The home side had two good chances on the break, a looping shot hit the top of the crossbar before Ben Crilley hooked a shot off the line.

Buckhurst Hill had plenty of chances to increase their lead but a block on the line and a save by James Bransgrove kept the score at 1-0.

There was a penalty shout as Danny McCullock was brought down in the box but the referee wasn’t interested and all shouts were waved away. The home side took advantage of the penalty shouts and almost went to the other end and scored but the shot was wide of the target.

With almost the last touch of the game, Stow were level after Ryan Reed’s cross met the head of Ollie Fortune who put it in, sending the game to penalties.

It was a comfortable penalty shoot-out for Walthamstow as they won 3-0. After one penalty each Stow were one-nil ahead with James Bransgrove saving to his left and Ethan Kessel scoring from the spot.

Hill’s second penalty was spooned miles over, but was ordered to be re-taken as Bransgrove was off his line. However, at the second attempt the penalty was dragged wide. A goal for Ryan Reed and Charlie Yexley either side of a miss by Buckhurst Hill with an attempted Panenka was enough for Stow to go through to the next round.
