A goal from Josh Brimacombe-Wiard was not enough to see Stow through to the next round of the Gordon Brasted Trophy as goals from George Smith and Sam Byles saw Hashtag United leave East London with a 3-1 win. Ryan Maxwell named a heavily changed side as both teams battled the elements as well as each other.

It was Walthamstow who started off the quickest and Ollie Fortune had a chance to open the scoring when Hashtag’s keeper dropped the ball but he could only find the side netting. Despite a quick start from Walthamstow, it was the visitors who took the lead when right-back Sam Byles was presented with an opportunity at the back-post. Four minutes later, Hashtag found themselves two-nil up as George Smith converted his first of the night following a counter-attack from the Tags.

Just before half-time, Walthamstow got a goal back through Brimacombe-Wiard. Hashtag failed to clear a corner ball and Jamie Bennett hooked the ball back in before Brimacombe-Wiard flicked it over the line. Stow had a penalty shout within the minute but the referee wasn’t interested and waved all shouts away.

The first half ended with the visitors leading 2-1.

It was Stow again who dominated the opening minutes and Charlie Yexley had a chance when he was through on goal but the skid on the pitch took it away from him.

Neither side really dominated as the second half went on and the conditions meant that it was difficult to play football but there was a chance for Hashtag when a Hashtag player hit one from outside the box but it just skimmed the post.

The away side got their 3rd in the 82nd minute when George Smith got his second after a good cross was fired into the box and converted well. That seemed like the last action and the game ended 3-1.

Stow’s next game is in the Essex Senior League against St Margaretsbury on Tuesday 8th October as Ryan Maxwell’s side look to continue their unbeaten run this season and push for the league title.
