Goals from Dwade James, Lewis Francis and Michael Toner saw Walthamstow beat Sawbridgeworth Town as they moved back up to second above Hashtag United and closed the gap on Saffron Walden Town following their loss to Stansted. Max Mitchell recorded his second win as Stow manager as the club continued to fight for promotion and the title.

It was a quick start from Walthamstow but they couldn’t take an early lead. Dwade James got on the end of a Connor Scully cross but his head rattled the crossbar in the first minute before Callum Ibe’s shot from the edge of the box was saved and the rebound from Michael Osei was smothered by the keeper.

The deadlock was broken in the 24th minute and Stow were on their way to yet another victory when James turned and fed the ball into Lewis Francis who rolled it past the keeper.

The pressure continued and Stow doubled their lead 14 minutes later when a cross from Michael Osei was met by a slight touch from Lewis Francis who sent it through the keepers leg to double Walthamstow’s lead and get his second of the afternoon.

Walthamstow extended their lead just before half-time through Dwade James. After initially trying to play the ball through to Lewis Francis for the hattrick, the ball was blocked before James curled the ball into the top corner from the edge of the box. The attacks from Stow didn’t stop there and Callum Ibe almost added to the lead when he was inches away from tapping in a cross delivered by Francis and a couple of corners were almost scrambled in.

It was Sawbridgeworth Town who had the better of the chances at the start of the second half but brilliant defending and good goalkeeping denied the visitors a goal. Jason Beck managed to hook away a ball that was waiting to be tapped in before Lewis Todd got down well to his left after Sawbridgeworth broke.

Despite the chances for the visitors, it was Walthamstow who scored to extended their lead. After pinball in the visitors box, Michael Toner found some space and smashed home a strike from the edge of the box to inflict more misery on the Robins in added time.

The referee brought the game to an end to confirm a straight-forward victory for Stow and their return to winning ways in the Essex Senior League.
