Walthamstow tumbled out of the FA Vase at the first hurdle, going down 3-1 to Takeley, after extra time.

The two sides had met in the league only a few weeks ago, and Stow were looking to put that 4-1 defeat behind them as early as possible.

It could have been a dream start as James Peagram flicked on Chris Lecointe’s deflected shot past Ronnie Yates in the sixth minute, but the linesman raised his flag against Peagram.

Six minutes later, the visitors took the lead, hitting Stow on the break. The ball was pumped up field from the left back position and Charlie Cole made no mistake.

Just before the break Stow thought they should have had a penalty when Christian Owusu’s legs were taken from him when about to shoot, but the referee was unmoved.

Then came the moment which changed the game. Stow manager, Ryan Maxwell, earlier booked for dissent, was shown a second yellow card for a high tackle in midfield.

But this didn’t deter Stow in the second half, and Yates had to perform superbly to deny Owusu and Peagram. However, up the other end Takeley hit the woodwork twice, and had two goals disallowed for offside.

With six minutes to play Stow got back in the game. Superb play from Rheo Josephs earnt him some space in the box, and when his fluffed shot fell to Peagram, the striker curled a beautiful effort into the far corner.

But the home side’s hopes of a replay were seen off in the first half of extra time, when Stuart Zanone was able to lob Chris Clark from just inside the centre circle.

Andre Humphrey made sure of the win in the second half of extra time.
