A much better performance at Edgware must have given manager Martyn Busson cause for optimism but again it was the second half performance which meant the Lilywhites ended up pointless for the second time in three days. Leyton Pennant controlled the whole of the first half and could have gone in at half time three goals up but, instead, they only had one goal to show for their troubles.
On eight minutes a beautiful move started by a Tilley free kick, on the right of the Edgware penalty area, went short to Chick. His return was swung to the far post by Tilley, it was met by Notley whose powerful header smashed against the post. Pennant’s attacking football always caused problems for a fairly open Edgware defence. This bore fruit after 19 minutes when Ian Barnes intercepted the ball on the left and flighted a low hard cross to Chick on the right of the area. He controlled with one touch and scored with the next. A truly excellent goal.
Edgware had chances to equalise but their wayward shooting and lack of imagination caused few problems until minutes before half time when Lilywhites’ Craig Knox was called on to make an excellent point blank save. The play soon switched to the other end when Whittamore was called on to save point blank from Dave Russell meeting Chicks cross in the centre of the six yard box.
Edgware were more determined from the start of the second half but it took them until the 66th minute to break down a hardworking Lilywhites’ defence. Scott Beatie made a lateral run along the back of the defence, lost his marker, picked up a through ball from Carr, took two paces, shot and scored. Although the Lilywhites defence still worked extremely hard it began to look like a rearguard action. Edgware got the winner on 72 minutes when defender Mark Leslie rose unmarked at the back post to head in a corner.
