Leyton Pennant inched nearer to mid-table safety as they ignored the inclement conditions to produce a fine performance.
Playing a controlled short-passing game to counter the high winds, the Lilywhites took the lead from a Billy Read penalty after a Maidenhead defender had handled his own shot on the line. The rest of the half was one-way traffic and Pennant doubled their lead on half-time when Gary Richefond, making his first start, ran half the length of the pitch to slot home.
Maidenhead’s early second half pressure paid off with a goal in the 53rd minute, but this only served to make the Lilywhites raise their game. The goal that clinched the victory was brilliantly executed. Richefond won the ball in midfield, passed it to Dixon on the left and the resulting cross was met by Read, lurking on the right post, to finish with the outside of his foot.
The only sour note on the night was Marsh being dismissed five minutes from time for handball on the line. Even the mark on his shirt failed to save him. Justice was done when Maidenhead missed the resulting penalty.
