Billy Cove’s fabulous 25-yarder sank rock-bottom Yeading and earned Pennant a precious three points.
Keeper John Cheesewright performed heroics in the Pennant goal and played a key part in ensuring the home side’s second victory of the season. He pulled off a series of fine saves when the score was only 1-0 to see Kevin Moran’s struggling side put some distance between them and the bottom clubs.
Cheesewright’s efforts, in what was only his second game since arriving, proved the turning point as Pennant fought to hang on to the lead afforded to them by Billy Read’s first half strike. The ever dangerous Billy Cove worked himself some space down the left hand side and drove in a cross which Read turned in with his right foot.
Cove grabbed the vital second after the break when he gained possession 35 yards out, held off a defender and fired a low powerful shot past the keeper.
Yeading scored the latest of late consolation goals in the sixth minute of injury time.
And although the home fans had to cope with another 60 seconds frantic whistling Pennant managed to hold on to inflict Yeading’s ninth league defeat of the season.
Manager Kevin Moran said: “We have started to get a bit of consistentcy back into our game now. We have lost just two of the last 12 games and one of those was an FA Cup match. I am delighted with the attitude of the players at the moment and I think things are going just right.”
