Tuesday’s Division 1 North Round-Up

Romford gave their Ryman League Division One North play-off bid a boost with a 3-2 victory at Heybridge Swifts on Tuesday night in their first outing for exactly four weeks.

Heybridge had just parted company with manager Wayne Bond after ten league games without a win and it looked as if their luck might have changed when Tom English put them ahead with a 3rd minute penalty.

Alex Read quickly made it 1-1 after determined work by Toran Senghore, who managed to retain possession and make the decisive pass while lying on the ground.

English restored the home side`s lead after 25 minutes, again from the spot. Romford have only conceded ten league goals and half of them have come from penalties.

Jack Barry levelled matters again 8 minutes later and the same player headed the winner 7 minutes after the break.

In an entertaining game, Heybridge were left frustrated by three superb saves by Adam Rafis, including one point-blank double block, and a goalline clearance by Andy Edmunds.

Romford are now just one point behind fifth-placed Potters Bar Town with five games in hand.

Potters Bar were beaten 2-0 at Ware with goals midway through each half from Gazmend Dauti and Matt Mitchel.

Needham Market, meanwhile, moved to within two points of leaders East Thurrock United with two games in hand.

They achieved their second 1-0 win in Essex on successive Tuesdays, following up last week`s victory at Heybridge by seeing off Great Wakering Rovers, thanks to Rhys Henry`s goal on the hour-mark.

AFC Sudbury stayed level on points with Romford, although they have played four games more, with two unanswered goals at Cheshunt.

Dave Wareham got the first after 39 minutes and James Baker added a late second.
