Walthamstow 1-1 Newmarket Town

Walthamstow picked up their second point of the season at home to Newmarket Town in a 1-1 draw at Wadham Lodge.

Stow had the first real chance to get in front 6 minutes in with Pedro Carvalho producing some great skill to get past right back Jakob Buckle and put a cross towards the far post where it skimmed the head of Samir Ali.

Twenty two minutes in and it was Stow who took the lead, a switch of play from Gassem Benelghazi bounced over the head of captain Josh Coulson and landed perfectly for Pedro Carvalho who rifled the ball off the underside of the crossbar and into the net.

Stow were slowly looking for their second goal as a long throw in from Joe Elliott landed for Rasheed Salau who could only head wide from 6 yards.

Before half time, skipper Reece Conway’s shot on the edge of the box took a deflection which was parried by James Young into the path of Samir Ali and his shot was also saved by the Newmarket keeper.

The second half started particularly slowly, with both sides struggling to create a real opportunity; but it would be the visitors who equalised on the 64th minute from a corner headed by Olu Oluwatimilehin only as far as Jockeys captain Josh Coulson who volleyed past David Hughes to level the scoreline.

Stow looked the better after the setback trying to regain the lead with Conway swinging a cross towards substitute Tyrone Baker who could only fire over from close range. A minute later and Baker had another big chance as he got onto the end of a long ball and drove into the box only to fire high and wide.

The next big chance came 10 minutes from time via Tyrone Baker who rushed onto the end of a through ball splitting the Jockeys defence and fired only inches wide of the far post.

The score remained level with both teams unable to snatch the win. Stow now travel to bottom side Cambridge City on Bank Holiday Monday.
