Burnham Ramblers 1-0 Waltham Forest

Bank Holiday Monday saw another defeat for Waltham Forest – this time on their travels to Burnham Ramblers.

The home side controlled most of the game, and were far ahead in the number of goal scoring chances created. But after holding out for so long, Forest were devastated to concede a 79th minute winner.

Billy Hunt and Reiss Gilbey both looked lively up front for Burnham, who had put four goals past Maldon & Tiptree on Saturday before their match was abandoned due to a waterlogged pitch.

Reece Brandon should have given the home side the lead on 20 when he headed over while unmarked from a corner.

Richard Worrell went closest for Forest at the other end, rattling the crossbar after being judged marginally offside.

Forest made a bit of a better fist of things in the second half, with Tunje Oyelwale looking dangerous, but the tricky winger was unable to deliver that final pass.

Midway though the half Errol Hassan was booked after going in for a 50-50 ball. Interestingly, neither the referee or linesman signalled for a foul. It was only after the man in the middle was accosted by a group of Ramblers players that he decided to brandish the yellow card.

On 76 Hassan received his second caution of the match. Again, it was an extremely soft booking as the Ramblers forward fell to the ground after turning Hasssan in midfield.

Having to re-jig their defence, the inevitable happened on 79 when Forest eventually conceded. After a goalmouth scramble when Forest cleared the initial two shots, George Sonko eventually fired home past three defenders on the line and Ashley Harris in the Forest goal.

Forest were then outraged that they were not awarded a penalty. When clean through on goal, Hulusi Mustapha was pole axed by the home defender, who also took Oyewale out with the same challenge – just for good measure.

In the end, the match petered out with Ramblers playing keep-ball to secure the points.
