Non-League Legend: Marvin Samuel (Part 5)
In parts one and two of our look back at Marvin Samuel’s career, we saw how we was a key figure at Harlow Town and Boreham Wood, reaching the semi finals of the FA Trophy and earning promotion with the latter.
In part three, we saw Marvin make his first foray into management, starting at Harlow Town, where he by then had legendary status.
In our penultimate part, Samuel stars the first of his three seasons in charge at Hertford Town.
2014-15
Samuel returned to Forest for a second spell during the 2014-15 pre-season, despite starting the period with Waltham Abbey.
This spell only lasted a few friendlies though, as he moved on to Enfield 1893. He did manage to score though, converting an Alan Callaghan cross against Welwyn Garden City.
He was at Enfield 1893 at the competitive start of the 2014-15 season, and scored against eventual title-winners Haringey Borough. Sadly for Samuel and Enfield, Borough scored, ten. Samuel did follow it up with a goal in Enfield’s 5-1 FA Cup demolition of Tower Hamlets.
From there, it goes a bit quiet, and appears Samuel may have taken time out of first team football.
2015-16
In May 2015, Samuel was announced as Barkingside Assistant Manager, working with newly-appointed gaffer Gus Gulfer.
But this did not last long, and was back in the Waltham Forest first team in September, playing against Southend Manor in his first game back
He made 11 starts in 2015 for Forest, and one sub appearance. This final appearance came in Turgut Esendagli’s first game in charge, helping Forest to a 3-2 win over London Bari.
He was sent off once for Forest – against Wadham Lodge – where bizarrely, players from opposing teams were sent off for the same tackle.
Samuel remains at Forest, and is currently working in a coaching role with the first team. Marvin will continue playing Sunday football for Barnet Hearts – where he scored a hattrick just last December.
