Walthamstow 4-1 Heybridge Swifts

Walthamstow were victorious on Saturday taking apart a disapointing Heybridge Swifts side 4-1 at Wadham Lodge.

It was complete control from Stow, who scored two in each half and could have had six, if not for two disallowed efforts for five side.

Stow started the better side hitting the woodwork inside the first five minutes. Shawn Joseph’s long throw managed to bounce through a crowd of people in the box and hit the post and was cleared away. It was a sign of things to come later in the game.

Six minutes later, Stow scored the first of the afternoon. David Hughes managed to find Callum Ibe with a beautiful ball over the top of the Heybridge defence, who looped the ball over goalkeeper Tommy Dixon-Hodge and into the net.

The chances kept coming, with Shawn Joseph’s shot saved by Dixon-Hodge, and Chris Regis’ effort from distance was also denied.

Heybridge started to create chances of their own, with Michael Salako’s shot rolling wide of the post and a free kick from Joshua Colyer hitting the bar and bouncing back out.

Just before half time, Stow found their second. Brian Garzon’s corner was well met by Jordan Peart who headed in at the back post to give Stow a secure lead going into the break.

The second half began in a positive manner, with Heybridge captain Connor Witherspoon handling the ball in the box giving the referee no choice but to point to the penalty spot. Brian Garzon stepped up and put it in his favourite bottom corner to make it 3-0.

Ten minutes later, Stow were given another penalty when Demi Elegushi was fouled in the box. Charlie Heatley took this one, but it was the same outcome with Heatley finding the bottom corner and making it 4-0 to Stow. He would also find the net five minutes later, but it was ruled out for offside.

Heybridge went and found the net in the 73rd minute when substitute Ben McCrow found himself on the left-hand side, cut inside and found the bottom corner to give the travelling Swifts fans something to cheer about.

Stow had the ball in the net once again when Chris Regis thought he had scored but it was once again disallowed for offside.

Walthamstow climb up to 14th in the league table and sit 11 points outside the drop zone, with an upcoming trip to Concord Rangers on Tuesday.
