Witham Town v Forest Preview (3-11-12)

Waltham Forest will look to build on a recent good run of form as they travel to Spa Lane to take on Witham Town this weekend.

Forest are unbeaten in three, and have scored 24 goals in their last six games, including six in a midweek win over Needham Market.

Forest’s recent good form has seen them surge up the table, to their current position of 11th, while Witham sit 17th, with a record of three wins, one draw and six defeats from their 10 matches so far.

The last time Witham had the taste of victory in the lealgue was way back on the 22nd of September, when they put four past Ilford. Indeed, Witham’s start to the season was impressive, beating Thamesmead Town and Wroxham in the league, and hammering Great Yarmouth Town 8-1 in the FA Cup.

Since then, their only victory has been the previously mentioned win over Ilford. Out of their five defeates in the league, all bar one have been by the solitary goal.

We have a fairly even record with Witham over the years. We have met 8 times, with Forest winning four, the points being shared once and Witham victorious three times.

Our first encounter was on the 7th of May 1996 when Witham won 3-1. We then had to wait over ten years until the clubs met again, this time Witham ran out 7-3 winners, in a strange early-season match.

The last meeting between the two clubs was in January 2009, when Forest recorded a 1-0 victory over a Witham side that would eventually be relegated. Mike Ramkin got Forest’s only goal that day, as Wale Ojelabi and Joel Palmer were both in the starting line-up.

The Beer Hunter’s Guide to Witham:

We’re off to Witham, for the first time since we played our final few home games there a few years ago after we were booted out of Wadham Lodge. The part of town to head for here is Newland Street, which contains the Battesford Court (Wetherspoons), the George, the Red Lion, the Spread Eagle and the Swan. Be warned, however – the football ground is out on the edge of town, so allow around 20-30 minutes walking time to get there. On our last visit, the Beer Hunter did notice a nice little pub about halfway to the ground (which was then closed for refurbishment), but it doesn’t feature on the current list at www.beerintheevening.com , so maybe it’s gone the way of many other small backstreet pubs.

The match will be filmed and highlights will be on Stags TV.
