Billy Cove became the first Leyton Pennant player to reach double figures with a brace of goals that provided the foundation for the Lilywhites’ victory at Leatherhead in the preliminary round of the Ryman League Cup. The win sets up a first-round visit to Ryman Premiership-outfit Borehamwood.

The opening goal came on the half hour when Billy Cove shot past the post from a Simon Tickner cross, but a minute later he collected a long clearance from Ian Barnes and side-stepped Vaughan in the home goal to put Pennant in front.

After the break Pennant again created several chances, with Notley and Sam Underhill both going close. On 58 minutes Cove added a second when a long clearance was poorly dealt with by home defender Scott, and the Pennant striker nipped in to slot the ball past Vaughan.

Pennant then eased off and Leatherhead came more into the game. Tickner headed off the line and minutes later Stephan Ball headed home at the near post from a cross to reduce the arrears.

With less than 15 minutes left, midfielder Alex Inglethorpe scored the equaliser when he was left unchallenged on the edge of the box.

But with three minutes to go, Cove beat the home defence to a Barnes free kick and squared the ball for Jay Notley to blast home the winner.
