Leyton Pennant manager Lyndon Lynch was treated to a lacklustre display in his first game in charge against fellow strugglers Worthing.
He watched as the Lilywhites slid to their fourth successive league game without a win to leave them struggling in the bottom five of the Ryman League division one.
Both sides were desperate for points and this was reflected in a nervous opening period which saw few clear-cut chances created.
The first decisive strike of the game, after 19 minutes, produced the first goal for the visitors.
A good run down the right wing from Weston forced the opening and after his cross was flicked on by Carrington, Rice finished things off with a close-range header.
Pennant’s two nearest efforts of a dismal first half showing were a header by Stuart McClean and a left-foot shot from Jason Gerraghty, neither of which seriously threatened the Worthing goal.
Before the home side had a chance to impose themselves in the second half, they found themselves two goals behind. A Pennant attack had broken down and, as Worthing broke away, John Kent’s mis-directed header fell into the path of Carrington who slotted the ball past the advancing John Cheesewright in the Pennant goal.
This injected a little more urgency into Pennant’s play but it was only five minutes before the end that they got their consolation.
Substitute John Lowe’s cross found Billy Cove in the box and as he battled for possession the ball ran on to Kevin Riley who forced the ball home for what could have been a lifeline for the Lilywhites.
There was no sign of the equaliser, however, and Worthing were able to comfortably hold on to their lead to move above Pennant in the table.
