He came to the club midway through the 1996-7 from Bromley, where he played under our former manager George Wakeling.
Silk was a cult hero at Bromley, a tricky winger who could play as a striker, though he was one of those players who seemed to be left out of the team as soon as results got poor.
He was in the Bromley side who beat us in our first London Senior Cup final appearance at Leyton Pennant, played at Millwall’s ground and our manager at the time Paul Taylor, knew Andy very well having played in the same side as him until a few years previously.
Taylor brought him to the club as a winger and even used him as a striker, but, his small frame meant he was never ever going to be a target man.
In one match, he was used as an emergency replacement at full-back and proved so effective, he continued in that position for the rest of his Leyton Pennant career, except for a spell where he was also used as sweeper at the heart of the defence.
His inconsistent days as an all or nothing winger, who could either be brilliant or a damp squib, were long since banished as he turned into a reliable and consistent performer adaptable enough to play in most positions in the team and he was even given the captain’s armband for at least one season.
In the 1998-9 season he tallied up an incredible 60 appearances in one season, the most by any one player.
He was a popular player with supporters as they knew what they were getting with Andy, one hundred percent commitment and completely focused performer, who rarely got booked and never saw red.
After three and a half season with us between 1997 and 2000, (making 8, 48, 60 and 40 appearances), Silk left us for a return to Bromley, and spent the last few years of his career playing for Cray Wanderers in the Kent League where he teamed up with former team-mate Ian Rawlings who was player-manager.
While at Cray, Silk made the quarter finals of the FA Vase, and won the Kent League, the Kent Senior Trophy and was a defeated finalist in the Kent League Cup.
After his playing days, he became the manager of the Cray Wanderers reserve side..
