In a match where Leyton Pennant spent 60% of the time playing some of their best ever football, they were unlucky to come away from their Essex neighbours with at least the point they deserved.
From Pennant and right from the start a flowing move between four players gave Billy Cove a scoring chance as he broke through a sluggish home defence, only to be brought down on the edge of the box by a poor challenge.
Cove soon took his revenge when, on the seventh minute, he controlled a long Russell Ling clearance on the edge of the Wivenhoe penalty area, took two strides and slammed the ball into the far corner of the net.
Wivenhoe did try to make a comeback but were confounded by the Lilywhites defending way outside their own penalty area. The only thing they could do was try to put in long crosses most of which Ling caught with one hand.
The Lilywhites were unfortunate not to go further ahead when Tresadern won a corner on 17 minutes.
Underhill’s kick caused all sorts of problems in the home defence as it shot around the six yard box with the Wivenhoe keeper Moyes laying prostrate on the ground. But instead of going into the net the ball somehow found its way into Moyes’ grateful arms.
The half carried on with the visitors dominating until the 40th minute when Wivenhoe scoredwhen a free kick was given away on the left of the Lilywhites’ penalty area.
The cross should have been easily dealt with but Russell Ling’s punch out found Day unmarked on the edge of the area whose volley flew into the back of the goal.
As the second half began Wivenhoe started to take charge.
On 65 minutes Day was able to put Wivenhoe into the lead when he shot home from close range following the home side’s extra pressure.
For the last twenty minutes the Lilywhites pressed forwads but to no avail, as Tickner, Tresadern and Waldron all squandered chances.
