Waltham Abbey 6-0 Walthamstow

Walthamstow’s FA Trophy campaign came to a disappointing end on Saturday after a 6-0 loss away at Waltham Abbey.

Stow were blown away by both the heavy winds and the opposition, who took full control from the kick off.

The hosts were the ones on top for the first half and nearly took the lead 17 minutes in. Former Stow winger Tayo Oyebola’s cross found striker Kai Brown but his backheel flick went just wide of the far post.

On the half hour mark, Abbey took the lead. Aaron Eyoma received the ball from Oyebola and turned past Olu Oluwatimilehin and fired the ball into the far corner past David Hughes.

Eight minutes later and the hosts doubled their advantage. Brown’s shot was cleared off the line by captain Stow Reece Conway, but the ball fell for Oyebola unmarked who controlled the ball and volleyed it past Hughes into the far corner.

The second half began with Abbey on the front foot and had a golden chance to make it three. An attempted clearance from Joe Elliott was blocked by Eyoma who was taken down by an on-rushing Hughes but the ball fell for Matthew Price who had an open goal in front of him but somehow hit the side netting to the disbelief of everyone in the stadium.

Stow had a good chance of their own which they should have taken to get back into the game. Former goalkeeper Bradley Robinson’s throw was cut out by Brian Garzon who drove forward but his shot on the edge of the box skimmed the side netting.

Abbey’s mistakes kept on increasing but Stow couldn’t capitalise on them. Pique Humble’s challenge on Amrit Bansal-McNulty was waved away by the referee and collected by Pedro Carvalho. His pass found Humble who did well to get defender Edwin Mensah on the floor and have a shot on goal, but he could only put it wide on the edge of the six-yard box.

With 63 minutes on the clock, Abbey made it three. Declan Ryding’s forward ball was picked up by Bansal-McNulty who skipped past Jordan Peart and squared the ball across the face of goal to Price who made up for his earlier mistake and tapped home into an empty net.

The hosts then made it four when a long punt up field from Robinson found Bansal-McNulty who took one touch to get away from substitute Te Wihongi and fire over Hughes and into the net.

Into the first minute of 5 minutes added time and Abbey scored their fifth of the afternoon. Price skipped past Wihongi and found Abdirahman Mohamud unmarked at the backpost who found the net with an easy header.

Abbey scored their 6th goal just three minutes later. A foul from Humble on Price left the referee no choice but to point to the spot. Kai Brown stepped up and scored his first goal of the afternoon and Abbey’s sixth sending Hughes the wrong way.

Waltham Abbey proceed to the First Round Proper and will host Chatham Town on the 25th October. Walthamstow’s next fixture comes on Saturday hosting Downham Town in the Isthmian League Division One North.
