Walthamstow 2-1 Cambridge City

Walthamstow picked up another three points on Tuesday night after a 2-1 win at home to Cambridge City in the Isthmian League.

The visitors were the ones who started the better and took the lead within the first three minutes. Aaron Williams-Bushell found himself in acres of space at the far post, received the ball and smashed it home past David Hughes to give City the lead.

City kept pushing and creating trouble for the Stow defence and nearly doubled their lead if it wasn’t for a good save by David Hughes. Jordan Peart gave the ball away straight to City striker George Smith who found himself one on one, but Hughes made a great stop to deny him.

Stow were then awarded a penalty in the 13th minute when Rasheed Salau was fouled in the box. Brian Garzon scored his penalty on the weekend and took this one but was denied by goalkeeper James Philip.

In the 19th minute, Stow found their equaliser as Charlie Heatley got onto the end of Jared Small’s long ball forward and fired home into the corner to level the game.

The chances kept coming for the home side and came close to taking the lead. Jordan Peart’s cross found Wilson Bernal whose shot rolled wide of the post, and Rasheed Salau’s shot was saved from close range.

Stow came out firing in the second half and kept creating opportunities when Jared Small did incredibly well to get past his man on the right-hand side and find Charlie Heatley in the box, but he fired over from close range.

Eventually, Stow got the goal they were looking for with a brilliant finish from Wilson Bernal who got the ball out wide, drove into the box and fired it across goal into the far corner to give Stow the lead for the first time on the night.

The rest of the second half became very end to end and scrappy, with neither side creating real danger or looking to go and get another goal. This meant the score remained the same and Stow picked up their second win in two games.

Walthamstow extend their gap between them and the relegation zone to seven points, and travel to Downham Town on Saturday who sit second from bottom.
