Joe has a unique place in our club’s history as the only player who ever played for Leyton, Walthamstow Pennant and Leyton Pennant.
Came up through Leyton reserves this centre half was a fringe player at the beginning, making appearances when the regular players were absent or often warming the bench.
He left for Walthamstow Pennant for regular first-team football and came back to the club in the mid 1990s at Leyton pennant where he was much more often selected as first choice both in defence or midfield as a holding player, specially selected for his heading ability.
The behind the goal mob started a chant in his name after one of his teammates called his name very quickly and it came out as Jowarley – so the call went up “Jowarley, Jowarley, Jowarley” (you had to be there). On hearing the singing he burst into a broad grin.
In fact, Joe was one of the nicest people you could wish to meet, but, like alot of players who are ever so amiable of the park, he collected more than the occasional red and yellow card.
Joe played for our veterans team, but tragically passed away playing Sunday League football in 2005.
