Division 1 North Round-Up – 27/11/10
It was a tale of two Krisses at Maldon & Tiptree, when a goal 10 minutes from time by Kris Newby – his fourteenth of the season – lifted East Thurrock United into second place in the Ryman League Division One North with a 1-0 victory at Maldon. The hosts had an earlier Kris Lee strike disallowed for a foul on keeper Richard Wray.
Rocks are a point behind leaders Wingate & Finchley with three games in hand after the north London club failed to hold on to an early lead at AFC Sudbury.
Gary Burrell put Wingate ahead after 17 minutes but Dave Wareham equalised 2 minutes before the break and it finished 1-1. Sudbury had the better chances to take all three points.
Harlow Town have knocked out three Premier Division teams – two from the Ryman and one from the Zamaretto – in the FA Trophy but they are finding opposition at their own level more testing.
They slumped to a fifth successive Division One North defeat, 2-1 at home to Waltham Abbey.
The score could have been much higher but for a succession of missed chances at both ends, with the hosts the worst culprits.
Good finishes by Louis Bristow in the 8th minute and Steve Cawley in the 23rd put Abbey on course for a second successive win, the first time they have achieved that this season.
They conceded their customary late goal, a 91st minute header by substitute Ben Bradbury, but it was too late to save Harlow who have leaked sixteen goals in those five defeats. Before that run they had won eight and lost only two, conceding just seven goals.
Only one other game beat the weather. That was at Potters Bar Town, who moved into a play-off spot, despite being held to a goalless draw by Brentwood Town.
The visitors came closest when Ellis Remy, who was with Potters Bar last season, hit the bar.
