Leyton Pennant put up a sparkling display against promoted Canvey Island at Wadham Lodge on Saturday to claim a much deserved point.

The returning Shaun O’Neill was called into action in the sixth minute when he needed two attempts to grab Williams’ attempted lob. However, four minutes later the visitors were ahead when Parmenter’s low shot took a wicked deflection. The wrong-footed O’Neill made a desperate grab for the ball, but he could only slow it down as it trickled over the line.

Briefly, the visitors, spurred on by their noisy army of fans, went in search of a repeat of the away match’s 6-1 drubbing. But the Lilywhites weathered the storm and hit back with the equaliser on the 20-minute mark.

A good ball from Billy Cove split the away defence and Billy Read fired home his 30th and Pennant’s 100th goal of the season. Again, the keeper got a touch but could not prevent the goal.

Cove could have put Pennant in front three minutes later, after latching on to a Tony Dixon pass, but this time the keeper kept it out.

At the other end, Parmenter turned sharply in the box only for O’Neill to bring off a point-blank save. The ball rebounded off Parmenter, but was then cleared off the line by skipper Paul Salmon.

Both sides continued to play some good penetrating football and Pennant could have gone ahead with ten minutes of the first half remaining but Adrian Allen’s shot went just wide.

The second half was quieter, although both teams strove for the winner.
