2009-10
Stags 1 – 2 Lowestoft Town
LOWESTOFT TOWN scored twice just before the interval to secure the three points to take them back into second place, writes Tony Brazier.
However, a spirited fight back in the final 20 minutes might have seen Forest take an unexpected point.
As often happens at Cricklefield the wind blows the length of the pitch, and the team with it at their back tends to dominate possession, and today was no exception. Lowestoft had the wind behind them, but it was 14 minutes before the first real chance was created when Matt Nolan crossed from the left and Michael Filletti did well to turn it out for a corner.
While having most of the play it took almost half an hour for Lowestoft to force a telling save from Sam Tanner in the home goal, and he did well to save from Janie Godbold. This was the start of a sustained spell of pressure which saw Scott Mitchell shoot wide and Tanner again thwart Godbold. Forest then broke away for their only real attack of the first half and Andy Reynolds did well to save from Rob Carter.
Lowestoft took the lead on 37 minutes when Andrew Fisk was fouled by Ben Gracey and Nolan converted the ensuing penalty with a fierce drive that gave Tanner no chance.
Their lead was doubled four minutes later when Ryan Oliva fouled Nolan, and Mitchell’s free kick from about 25 yards bent round the defensive wall and crept in at the left hand post with Tanner stranded.
After the break Forest began to gain more possession and Reynolds did well to punch away a free kick from Des Thomas and save a Carter header. At the other end Gary McGee headed over a Godbold cross.
Forest thought they had scored on 82 minutes when Oliva headed a Luke Stanley corner wide of Reynolds and a Lowestoft defender seemed to hook the ball away from behind the line, but it was judged by the officials not to have crossed the whitewash. From the clearance McGee had a chance to put the game out of reach, but he shot tamely wide after rounding Tanner.
Forest weren’t to be denied and pressed forward again for Victor Boyle-Renner to head home another Stanley corner on 84 minutes, but while they pressed for the equaliser, the closest they came was a Thomas header just wide of the target from another Stanley cross with just a minute to go.
